Seder Arba Ta’aniyos
Siddur for the Four Fasts
Amsterdam, 1658
A special siddur with halachos for the four fasts: Asara B’Teves, Ta’anis Esther, Shivah Asar B’Tammuz and Tisha B’Av.
The siddur includes: Shacharis, Mincha, and Ma’ariv prayers; kinos (lamentations); Megillas Eichah and the Book of Iyov; the Torah reading for Tisha B’Av and its Haftarah and other related prayers and texts.
An explanation in Ladino follows each verse of the Haftarah.
This is a rare siddur.
On some pages, traces of wax still remain—silent witnesses to the Jews praying from this siddur hundreds of years ago to the light of burning candles.
Featured at the top of the title page is the printer’s emblem of Emanuel Benveniste, depicting a lion leaning on a tower, with a star above them (see Yaari, Diglei HaMadpisim HaIvri’im, p. 145).
Amsterdam, 1658. Complete copy; however, irregular page count.
Small format: 15.3 cm.
Overall condition: good to fairly-good, with wear on the edges of the last pages, signs of use, and stains. Bound in an antique parchment binding (with new lining papers).
Provenance: William Gross Collection, Tel Aviv.
This copy is the one featured in the Otzar HaSefer HaIvri (Winograd).
