Drashah for 7 Adar, 1864
Handwritten Manuscript of Rabbi Yirmiyahu Loewe, Av Beis Din of Ujhely
“I delivered this drashah in the holy congregation of Ujhely on 7 Adar, 1864.” This lecture, handwritten by Rabbi Yirmiyahu Loewe, Av Beis Din of Ujhely, includes words of praise of the glory and greatness of Moshe Rabbeinu and his love for his brother Aharon the Kohen Gadol. In the past, it was customary for Rabbanim of Jewish congregations to deliver a drashah on the 7th of Adar, the yahrzeit of Moshe Rabbeinu.
Rabbi Yirmiyahu Loewe (1811-1874), Av Beis Din of Ujhely and author of ‘Divrei Yirmiyah’, was one of the great Hungarian sages of his generation. As a son of Rabbi Binyamin Wolf Loewe, author of ‘Shaarei Torah’, and grandson of the author of ‘Shemen Rokach’, he absorbed Torah and wisdom from his illustrious forebears. In 1844, he was appointed Av Beis Din of Magensdorf, and subsequently Av Beis Din of Verboy before succeeding his father as Rav and Av Beis Din of Ujhely in 1856. Rabbi Yirmiyahu Loewe endeavored greatly to improve the lot of Hungarian Jewry. His written legacy includes ‘Divrei Yirmiyah’ on the Rambam and Masechtos in Shas as well as several drashos.
To the best of Zaidy’s knowledge, this drashah has never been printed.
