Rare: First Printing of Tikkun Leil Shavuos
Venice, 1648
Order of learning for the nights of Shavuos and Hoshana Rabbah, based on the teachings of the two great luminaries, the Arizal and the Ramak.
This order of study, as printed here for the first time, was embraced by most Jewish communities and served as the basis for dozens of later printings.
The order of study on the night of Shavous and Hoshana Rabbah is based on the teachings of the holy Zohar regarding the importance of Torah study on these nights. However, the specific content to be studied was not detailed there and it developed during the period of the early Kabbalists of the Achronim, until it was formally established by the Ari as detailed by Rabbi Chaim Vital in Sha’ar HaKavanot and in the sefer Eitz Chaim.
Before this edition was published, one had to manually search and flip through various sections of the Tanach and the Mishnayos to complete the Tikkun reading. With this new printing, however, all the necessary sources were included in their entirety and arranged sequentially, creating the first structured edition of the Tikkun.
The tikkun was compiled by the sages of Verona according to the writings of the Ari, with additional selections from Mishnayos and various pesukim, sourced from manuscripts available to them.
The Shelah HaKadosh writes about the Tikkun Leil Shavuos: “The order of learning for this night has already been publicized and is well-known through the pamphlets that have spread… this custom has extended across Eretz Yisrael and all kingdoms… all accepted it, from the great to the small, and they took it upon themselves and their children.” (Maseches Shavuos, Ner Mitzvah §4)
At the end of the sefer is an approbation from the sages of Venice.
