Kabbalah
Asarah Ma’amaros by the Rema of Pano With Yad Yehuda Commentary.
First Edition. Frankfurt, 1698
‘Imros Tehoros’ with illustrated title page. This work contains five of the ten holy essays by the saintly kabbalist Rabbi Azarya Menachem of Pano, with ‘Yad Yehuda’, a fundamental, comprehensive commentary on his works by Rabbi Yehuda Leib of Frankfurt, Av Beis Din of Mainz.
‘Yad Yehuda’ was printed here for the first time and is considered the most foundational commentary on the writings of the Remah of Pano (see the preface to the new edition, Jerusalem, 2005).
The present five essays with commentary are:
Chikur Din; Eim Kol Chai; Maamar Hamiddos; Olam Katan; Ma’amar Ha’ittim.
Rabbi Yehuda Leib of Frankfurt, Rav of Mainz (d. 1714), served as Rav of Mainz for twenty-eight years and was one of the Rabbanim of Frankfurt. Besides ‘Yad Yehuda’ he also authored the ‘Zera Yehuda’ commentary on the Haggadah (Offenbach 1721), which includes a "wonderful commentary" on Birkas HaMazon (as described by the Chida in ‘Shem HaGedolim’).
In the Frankfurt community ledger, it was written about him:
"…He delivered magnificent expositions with great sharpness and Torah truths… and he became well-known through his work which was already published under his name, the sefer ‘Yad Yehuda’, a commentary on the Ten Ma’amaros…" (‘Knesses Yisrael’ by Rav Shlomo Yosef Finn)
