Sefer Yesod.

2 Sefarim

Responsa Terumas Hadeshen/Psakim U’Ksavim, Venice, 1546

A set of two important sefarim of halachic rulings by Rabbi Yisrael Isserlin, one of the great Rishonim of Ashkenaz.
1.
Terumas Hadeshen – 346 shailos and teshuvos (numerical equivalent of “דשן—deshen”).

2.
Psakim U’ksavim – Practical shailos and teshuvos referred to by the Achronim as “Kisvei Mahari”.

The Achronim mention a fundamental difference between these two volumes in regard to determining the halacha. While the first volume encompasses shailos that the Terumas Hadeshen personally pondered and debated, the second volume is a compilation of shailos that he received from others and resolved with a clear halachic ruling, thus assigning it greater halachic force and validity. (Shach, Yoreh Deah Ch. 196:20; Shem HaGedolim, MaAreches Gedolim, MaAreches 10 #402)

Rabbi Yisrael Isserlin (1390-1460), most famous for his landmark sefer Terumas Hadeshen, was one of the last Rishonim in Ashkenaz. He corresponded in Torah and halachah with the Maharil, Mahari Weil, and Maharam Mintz, all of whom praised his works effusively.

His sefer Terumas Hadeshen is a fundamental sefer and used as a basis for the halachos presented by Rabbi Yosef Karo in the Shulchan Aruch and the Rema.
